Went to see Barry.
Barry mentioned that he doesn't have any funding as he is a "newbie" supervisor. That should be alright given the money from Prof Clayton.
We discussed possible security projects. He mentioned how the old paradigm of "hard shell, gooey innards" as Win32.Blaster demonstrated. There has been much discussion of this recently with the idea of Windows autopatching. (When discussing this with Russell he reminded me that the Morris worm was originally an attempt to fix the vunrability.) Barry suggested a VDS (Vunerability Detection System) like Nessus with an autopatching extension. This would allow an admin to monitor the patch status of all machines on a network and patch them if necesary. Care would need to be taken to secure such a system as it would be come a juicy target.
Barry advised that I should spend the week reading and writing up short one paragraph descriptions with some URL's for each idea I have. That is my plan.
Now I just need a machine. Will nag Chris Morley until I get one.
