This is possible the best blog entry ever.
Last night Yusuf contacted Jason and myself and told us to be in the labs at 9am and wouldn't tell us why. I met Jason last night and he jokingly hypothesised that Yusuf was getting married, we figured it was more likely he was signing a lease and making a big thing out of it.
When we got in today and I noticed he was wearing his formal shiny pants, he then joked that he was getting married. I got all excited and told everyone, until Dave came down and informed me he was just going to get his passport renewed. I then told everyone it had been a hoax and hit him repeatedly on his head.
While walking to the department of home affairs we met up with Jan and all her friends, who assured us they were in fact getting married. I didn't believe this until about 15 minutes later and it was confirmed to me when his mother arrived and Yusuf asked the department officer how he goes about the whole marriage thing.
So we waited around and laughed about the sign on the door saying 'no undertakers', I got some flowers for Jan and we took photos. Neither Jan nor Yusuf seemed very excited which was understandable when standing in a room smeared with finger print ink. The reason for their lack of excitement is two-fold. The first is that they have been planning this for about 3 weeks, but he proposed last night. The second is that the real Islamic ceremony will be in June next year, and they don't consider themselves married until then.
After the long wait we went into the pokey office where the very busy woman poked and prodded their passports. Unfortunately Islamic tradition dictates that they must be married outside of community of property and to do this you need to sign an antenuptial (synonymous with pre-nuptial) contract. So we ran off to the lawyers who will try and get it ready as soon as possible (hopefully by 12pm).
Yusuf is getting married, to Jannat Noor-e (soon to be Motara). They are an awesome couple and I think they will have a long and very prosperous marriage. Also their children are the single scariest concept my mind can conjure right now.
HAPPY ENGAGEMENT YUSUF!
UPDATE: They are now legally married. We had non-alcoholic champage and everything.

Well, the previous twenty-four hours have been... interesting. Yusuf is married. And he likes Uncle Salie's Traditional Cape Homemade Bread with Oats and Honey. I
