So I am home...
...in South Africa's new mother city, Jo'burg. I am sitting 5 stories up in our new apartment. Something about being high up has gotten me far too contemplative.
Jo'burg is the new mothey city. There is this incredible vibe here, 'the African Reneissance' is happening right here, and right now. We have the Y generation forging it's new identity. Hip hop fashion mixed with african culture is only the surface but it travells much deeper. I feel a pride and love for this city, this place, like no indoctrination during kindergarten could even do (ever did) to me. The music, the art, the drama, the culture, the tech, the people. I firmly believe this to be the new hub of the world. I am proud, damn proud, to be an african.
Except I am stuck 5 stories up with the slowest internet connection of my life. This coincides with a nice piece by Russell on how our stupid bloody telco is trying to mess up our country. Where 'the country' means the people and not the government. Tomorrow I will be making a pringle can and using my 5 story advantage to look for a wireless connection with an ssid of 'Telkom'.
I watched 'Tears of the Sun' tonight. Bruce Willis is an army general who goes to Nigeria to get an american doctor out. He ends up getting a bunch of refugees out of the country, including their king. Full on ethnic cleansing scenes. Got me thinking about the soldiers who are out there trying to do good. Poor bastards. I could never handle that and I have some wierd respect for them. My religon tells me never to kill but when it's the guy raping the woman who's breasts he just cut off so she can't feed her baby if she survives... This got me thinking about how the American's had been portrayed as the heroic saviours. My step father is an American and has fought in a war. What the hell can I/we do about it. Sitting here and spouting forth the same old arguments just seems so pointless. Is the only way to change this world to become a billionaire and threaten the Bush'es of this world that way? What about the Mugabe's who fought a war for independence only to bludgeon any public protesters? Screw it man..
I had this conversation with my step-father about war and killing, while he sat there with a 6cm cancerous tumor in his lung. He fumbled with his next cigarette, placing it on his lips and savouring the taste... He started smoking 57 years ago. Everyone did it then, you tell him it's his fault.
