It started with the 3 hour council meeting and ended with a very informative chat with Matt Charlesworth.
We dealt with so much at the council meeting. The stuff directly relating to me is:
We also discussed:
- Our visibility awareness lunch is at Nelson Mandela hall this Saturday at 12:30. The one at Kimberly Hall was a learning experience.
- The SRC disciplinary board has been given their brief by Tham and will be used for conflict resolution between student groups, with the SRC focussing on reconcilliation. This is to prevent the SRC taking sides.
- A new lecture venue may be constructed on Barrat field.
- Demsoc is going to have to change it's name, as it is no longer fulfilling its mandate. This will require it to close down as a society and resubmit a mandate and get a new name. This is to prevent defunct societies from being hijacked and becoming something completely different. However the descision on wether to accept their new society is a contencious one. One reason for this is that their parties are large and involve drinking. For this reason they should submit their plans to someone for approval to ensure the saftey of the students. The SRC does not want to do this as then if something goes wrong we are in trouble, also we do not want to be seen supporting a heavy drinking party society. The other option is the Registrar. He would tell us to close it down. Instead we are taking it to student forum and getting the students to vote on wether to accept or reject the new society. This would provide a usefull point to move forward from with admin (if the society is accepted). Two points to note however is that:
- Their new mandate will have to comply with the society policy and be more than a "party society".
- We will meet with the Demsoc comm to discuss all of this first.
- The working group tasked with the creation of a proposal for residence and hall survey evaluation, of which I am part will meet on Monday the 8th at 2pm. During my chat with Matt I was shown the impressive Allan Webb spreadsheet which allows for easy entry of results and some great reports to be generated.
- St. Mary's has been condemmed? A rumour? Jin will find out from Dr. Motara tomorrow.
- The radio show (where I was interviewed and spoke horribly) will be airing at 9am later today.
We also discussed:
- The creation of a Post Grad common room.
- The oppie bus transporting to the Gavil Reilly PG village.
- The dangers of Micro-management.
- A bunch of advice and his experiences on how the university worked.
- Historical Reasons for many of today's decisions.
