We wanted to go away, but parents weren't happy, so we decided to say in and celebrate on Saturday.
We started the weekend off at Grahamstown's new Jazz club, The Trading Store, on Friday. Last week (opening night) we had had to que, so this time we booked a couch in advance. The evening started off with Gareth's 'Random Quartet' as a teaser. After this the Andrew Tracy Steelband took over as the main attraction, with Gareth joining on various trombones. During the night almost everybody I know in Grahamstown made an appearance. The Jazz club makes Grahamstown feel like a real city, the owner flouted the Grahsmtown asthetics committee so the place looks amazing, I felt like I was in Obs or Melville, and with the wine cheaper by glass than by bottle (and the same price as beer), I was in heaven.
On Saturday, Daniela and I went to the St. Mary's hall ball. Neither Danni and I are in res so we shouldn't technically be allowed to go, but my friend, Jin, is head student and got us some tickets. Over my six years at Rhodes I have been to my fair share of balls (at least two a year) and this was by far the best. The place looked absolutely amazing with an "enchanted forest" theme. The attention to detail was spectacular. The floor was covered in oak leaves, which provided much entertainment as the irritating drunk girl's dress train collected an enormous pile of leaves. We sat at a table with Jin and Danni's sister, Lara. Sitting at Jin's table had its benefits as the 'stray' bottles of wine kept finding their way to our glasses. The brownies deserve a special mention, their presentation was something to put most five star restaurants to shame and they tasted incredible. Even the music was good, which is strange for Grahamstown. After the ball we went home where I had some surprises involving hundreds of candles and flowers planned, Danni brought the champagne.
On Sunday we spent the whole day relaxing together. We baked, cooked, slept, watched Lost, went for walks then ordered in and ate some more. It was an excellent day.
