The DA came and spoke this evening. I was very impressed.
I went into the meeting with my usual contempt for the DA and came out thinking differently and cursing politicians.
They had three people up there. One was the EC regional head who was a complete chop, he played the race card over and over (look how many black people we have here, I can speak Xhosa, I will shout to make my point seem more relevant) and was a typical politican. The other two however were good, damn good. The one was a lady named Raenette Taljaard who is the head of the DA's financial committee and supposedly Trevor Manual's right hand. The first impressive thing was that she knew what the hell she was talking about and used very little rhetoric to convey this. She had policy all over the place and it was good policy. I disagreed with their idea of sanctions against Zim and getting rid of employment equity but other than that they had all the right ideas; free anti-retrovirals, long-term employment of skilled labout, skilling unskilled labour etc. all great ideas that all politicians spout but the difference here is that she had detailed policy on how to do this. This made my nipples very hard. The other guy was very quite but spoke well on the two occasions I heard him. I also liked him because he was quite a leftie and also had shambok scars on his back AND was persona non-gratis in Zimbabwe for his activism there (I am a sucker for activism).
There was the usual ANC rabble there to heckle the guys and they didn't have any good points until the guy asked about Sanctions on Zim and compared them to American-Muslims refusing to pay taxes for a war on their kin in Afghanistan. The loud dumb guy shouted that we have nothing to do with America, clearly missing the point. In the same round Ryan (the treasurer of the SRC) asked about their environmental policies and I really wanted to hear the answer to this but my mother phoned saying she had been in hospital.
Needless to say Danni and I ran out. Turned out it was nothing serious the doctor just wanted to check something out, Thank God.
Anyway and interesting evening and chekc out their policies in the meantime.
