I'm sure everyone has by now heard about the rootkit from First 4 that is installed without informing the user on certain Sony CDs. Well there are now three variants of breplibot which uses the Sony DRM technology to hide its process, file and registry keys. Breplibot is and IRC bot that connects to several IRC networks and awaits instruction.
Now for a snip from Sony's FAQ on the subject:
6. I have heard that the protection software is really malware/spyware. Could this be true? This is just plain unethical. At the very least their removal software does work.
Of course not. The protection software simply acts to prevent unlimited copying and ripping from discs featuring this protection solution. It is otherwise inactive. The software does not collect any personal information nor is it designed to be intrusive to your computer system. Also, the protection components are never installed without the consumer first accepting the End User License Agreement.
