I started getting some funny errors when I turned it on.
"<< change >>
!! hold-key on !!
Err flag=00000000 "
"English only fonts"
"Please load DEFAULT.ROM from the CD"
"Buildupl2ptable ()
Wrong ULlbaddress!"
This not only wouldn't let me turn it on and play it prevented it being registered as a USB storage device and so I couldn't reflash the firmware.
After hours searching Creative's many knowledgebases in many countries for a player with many names I found some information on the forums pointing to the same knowledge base that was completely useless before. (If you don't believe me check this out search for 'recovery' or 'rescue' or anything.) The UK knowledge base has it but the asian one doesn't. I even tried searching by solution ID. It is a shambles.
It is a completely arcane procedure and I am still not sure if you should be using the Rhomba or the MX firmware. I am using the MX and it works fine.
The link to the fix is here, but I don't trust that flakey site at all now so here it is republished in all it's glory.

!! Hold-key On !!
Err Flag = 0000000 - Slide the hold button to Hold position. The Rhomba will display "Checking system" "Formatting..... Wait for check....." and then the player will power off. The Rhomba has now been formatted.
Another way requires a connection to the computer:
- Press and hold the middle of Volume Control button, and connect the Rhomba to the computer.
- When the Rhomba starts and the format menu appears, release the Volume Control button.
- This may bring up a series of screens depending on if the Rhomba has been

a. English font only
b. Download firmware (if available) at www.creative.com
c. Format Handler Full or Quick - Use the Scroll wheel to select Full vs Quick Format.
- Press the Record button to start the format process.
- Once it is formatted, restart the player
Creative tech support got back to me. They said this:
"
Dear Customer,
SEE:

Enter the words or phrase you would like to search for:
Rhomba
For faster service please reply with previous correspondence when
replying to this email."
It actually listed the relvant article at the top of the list and the article was more informative that its uk counterpart (above has been updated), so in future always use the us knowledge base.
