NeoTel: South Africa's SNO

The competition to the bloated bureaucracy, Telkom, was launched on the 1st of September. Ladies and gentlemen, Neotel.

They currently aren't offering consumer services but plan to by April 2007. They have a fairly comprehensive FAQ available. Currently they are only offering wholesale broadband which should result in lower broadband prices from ISPs soonish. They have also done a good job of selling international carrier throuput to the cellular providers and claim we will soon have international CLI as a fringe benefit.

While it is a pity our government has chosen not to pursue a policy of full deregulation of this market (gosh, did I just say that), I welcome any competition to our evil monopoly Telkom.

Well the recently de-parastatalised BT has many competitors out here in the Uk and yet they still manage to monopolise the broadband/telephone market and still offer crappy services. I think free markets, or state owned services never work basically because of one corrupt factor-mankind. But how are you Dom?

That's one of the saddest thing, our not-too-bright communications minister is following the exact same model widely acknowledged to have failed in Britain. Telkom is our BT, just 100 years later. You think we could have learned something in that amount of time. I am very good, how're you Charm?

I can fully comprehend your position when considering the model taken in the UK but we still have to bare in mind that of importance is the ability for consumers to have choice,if this generates some form of price adjustment in the long term it will benefit the customer.And with any society ravaged by dichotomies monopoly will usher in some element of competition and if thats Neotel lets just open and watch in awe
